Is the Pillar Procedure (for snoring) FDA approved?
The Pillar Procedure has been FDA approved since 2002 for the treatment of snoring. Dr. Macdonald has been performing the treatment since it’s FDA approval. The implant system is designed to stiffen the soft palate so that the vibration of the palate is decreased. When the palate completely heals you may snore less often. Airflow is also increased which has helped improve symptoms for people with mild to moderate sleep apnea.
The implant system is easily performed in the office under a local anesthetic. Dr. Macdonald will numb the soft palate and use a special device to insert 3 to 6 Pillar implants. The implants stiffen the soft palate, reducing vibration and its ability to collapse during sleep. Most patients see a noticeable difference in 4 to 6 weeks. Since the implants are permanent, the Pillar procedure has the potential to have a lasting effect.
Most HSA (Health Savings Accounts) can be used for payment, however traditional insurance plans do not cover this procedure. During your consultation, Dr. Macdonald will perform an exam that does not require a sleep study to see if you are a candidate for this ground-breaking procedure for snoring and mild to moderate sleep apnea. If you’re a good candidate and would like to proceed, Dr. Macdonald can complete the procedure the day of your appointment or you can come back on another date.
